NASA's Overall Athlete Of The Year:
  3-WAY TIE!

by Job Hou-Seye

Well, nobody saw that one coming.

For the first time in the 21 year history of the NASA Overall Athlete of the Year Award being handed out, more than 1 person won it.  In fact, 3 of them did, namely, Tyson Meyers(KS), Gary Clock(ND), and Chuck Cookson(KS).

The NASA Overall Athlete of the Year Award is a Lifetime Achievement Award, and is typically awarded to an Athlete that participates in Powerlifting on many different levels, including competition, setup and load-out, spotting-loading, judging, coaching, and many other factors.  Therefore, lifting ability is only one factor, and Loyalty to the NASA Federation is a key component.

There can be no argument that the 3 Men who won the Award this year excel in their loyalty to NASA.  And they are all Great Lifters.  My task, now, is to spread their interviews over 2 or 3 Editions of the Wisconsin Powerlifting News.

Gary Clock, of Minot, ND, was my first interviewee, of the 3.  I have personally been at Meets where Gary has lifted, in Minot, ND, Las Vegas, NV, Denver, CO, Phoeniz, AZ, and Oklahoma City, OK.  And at all these Venues, he has always been a Good Sportsman, and is certainly deserving of the 2010 NASA Overall Athlete of the Year Award that he has won.

Job: When  did you get started in lifting and what was your motivation to become a lifter?

Gary: I started lifting in 1967 because I thought I was getting a little heavy, I weighed 134!  Two olympic lifters named Jim Rolle and Ken Weaver got me started and I was bitten by the bug!

Early WIPL Sponsors Identified

Few Meet Directors run enough Meets to have the Economy of Scales necessary to run the same Meets, year after year, without losing money on an Event, every now and then.  Fortunately, when they do lose money, the losses can be expensed on the taxes either as a direct business loss, or as a marketing expense.  And of course, when we make money, we have to report an income.

Overall, however, we do it for the Love of the Sport, and our Meet Receipts are usually just enough to cover the Awards, the Meeting Room, the Diesel Fuel, Accommodations and Food, etc.  Unfortunately, over time, equipment wears out, and things need replacing.

In 2008, 2009, and 2010, we did not solicit any money from our normal, past, Sponsors, because we knew that everybody, and every business, was hit hard by the Slump in the Economy, and that people and businesses would be allocating their Sponsorship and Advertising Dollars very wisely.  This year, however, we have to replace a few things, and we need to put a heavier axle on our Trailer.  Therefore, we sent out an early Solicitation for Sponsorship.

Fortunately, we have had some Early Response, and we want to recognize those who have already responded.  They include the David Aldag Family, James Rogers, the Sheboygan County YMCA, and 1-87S-AMS-ONTROPHY.
