Gary Clock Interview Continued from Front Page....

Job: How is your training different for each meet?

Gary: Over the years I have changed many way of cycling for a meet. Now I usually have a 10 week program where I use progressively heavier weights and less reps as I get to the end of the program!  I have a light day and a heavy day for each of the lifts except deadlift!

Job: Do you have anybody that you consider to be a lifting mentor or somebody who motivates you?

Gary: My  lifting mentor was Brad Weber, my training partner of 30 years. The training partners I have now are my motivators. Tracy Larson, Bob Brunner, Bill Johnson and Bethany Iverson.

Job: Where do you like to train and why?
Gary: I train at the Minot YMCA. Its one of the nicest facilities in the upper midwest and they are very lifter friendly.

Job: Is there a retired lifter, or somebody who is still lifting, who you consider to be your idol?

Gary: Several, Dr Darryl Johnson, Bill Helmich, Dale Roades, Rich Kahle, Mike Ewoldson, and too many more to list here.

Job: How has being a strength athlete affected your personal life ?

Gary: I have used my knowledge of lifting to prepare my basketball and track athletes to be stronger than our opponents. They may not have been as talented but we were always in the game because of our strength.  I have been able to travel and meet so many great people over the last 44 years that its hard to describe how much they mean to me.

Job: What are your personal goals over the next year or two?
Gary: I look to go to another weight class and be competitive for my age. I am trying to find a system of training that will cut down my minor injuries have been fighting over the last  couple of years.

Job: What is your favorite lifting event(curls, squat, benchpress, deadlift)?

Gary: Its the bench press because that's my best lift! I used like the deadlift the best but old age has taken that away from me. I have never liked the squat!

Job: What are your personal bests in the gym and your personal bests in a meet?

Gary: All my personal best are in a meet, I have done a 606 squat, 457 bench and a 600 deadlift when I was 31 @198.  I am not much of a curler but I did a personal best of 154 at the Masters this year!

Job: Where has been your favorite place to travel to, and compete, in a meet?

Gary: My favorite place is Nashville. My first national meet was the Master's Nationals that I attended there in 2002.  I also really like to lift in Las Vegas. Just ask some of my NASA teammates!

Job: What is your philosophy on training or where do you get your training tips?

Gary: My philosophy has changed over the years. In my younger years, I over trained to point I would hurt myself or get tendinitis in my elbows/knees.  As I get older, I find that less is more.  I do less sets and less poundage than before and I do better because I am not hurt or over trained. It's hard to resist showing the younger lifters that I can do anything you can do or more!  That darnn ego is the one you have fight to keep yourself physically sound.  Being a coach, I steal tips from anyone I can, then I try to fit them into a program that will benefit me. I am always learning something new about training and equipment. If you think you know everything about a subject, you are probably mistaken!

Job: Currently, do you have "rival" lifter who you would like to defeat on the platform?

Gary: Yes, his name is Gary Clock and I go after him every meet!

Job: What are your thoughts about past, and potential future, PRO meets?

Gary: I really find the PRO meets entertaining, having the best go against the best.  I wish I was a young M1 guy and I would see what I could do against these beasts!  I hope PRO meets can continue.

Job: Please discuss any topic we haven't touched on or anything you want people to know about you that we haven't discussed?

Gary: I want to thank you for doing so much for powerlifting in Wisconsin and NASA nationally.  I know that its a huge commitment and at times a financial sacrifice but I really appreciate all you and Wendy do for NASA!
